“Let nature work... What is rustic, messy, and dirty must become productive and beautiful again.” —Kongjian Yu

We first connected with Kongjian Yu—Founder, President, and Principal Designer of Turenscape (literally, “earth man,” symbolizing the deep bond between land and people)—while preparing the special issue Cities: Cities, Urbanism, Landscapes in 2009. That introduction was an eye-opener. His projects revealed a scale and complexity of public space design that was unprecedented, yet always rooted in natural processes of land, water, and vegetation. What struck us most was how ecological wisdom was seamlessly integrated with the beauty of space design and the everyday needs of people. We proudly showcased Small Site, Big Stories: Zhongshan Shipyard Park, a 27-acre brownfield transformed into a living landscape of renewal.
