THE GREEN BLUE
SIKANDERPUR FOREST | GURUGRAM
JRA Design
LA 76
Once an abandoned stone quarry turned into a desolate dumping ground for garbage and construction debris, the revitalization of Gurugram’s Sikanderpur Forest as a public park has undergone a remarkable change.
Intensive site visits to the degraded land led to understanding and absorb the site’s character, topography and its experience potential. Most suitable locations for entries, integrating existing trees as part of the entrance experience, destination points, trails with diverse character, are based on working with the land and enhancing its experiential potential.
The key factor in the proposed design is the storm water management – channelizing water from urban edges through the forest in a series of ponds, swales, and a linear channel as per the existing topography. It averts flooding on city roads, ease the burden on urban infrastructure and replenish depleting groundwater, while simultaneously breathing new life into the forest, which becomes a sponge with a high capacity for water recharge.
